Kenya top 40 women under 40- What does it take to get to the top?

The Business daily on 3rd June 2011 published the names of the top 40 women most influential corporate women in Kenya. Politicians and other public figures were largely excluded. The paper aimed to celebrate the women who work behind the scenes, away from the media cameras to deliver strong growth for their companies, organizations and country in general. Granted, ranking of this sort is bound to be subjective to some extent, and Business daily was quick to point this out.

It appears that one of the attributes to posses for one to reach the top is to have lots of experience. This may not be something that the present crop of generation Y professionals is not keen to follow. To this generation, instant results define their work and many are not willing to wait for ten plus years before they can get to the senior management positions. To this microwave generation, results must be realized quick and fast.

The other attribute that the top 40 women have is an education from an international university with a forbidding entry criteria. Many of these professionals have obtained their education from world leading universities. Consequently, many have also held international job postings. This increases their exposure and thus their marketability. For instance, Ory Okolloh, one of the women to be featured, holds a law degree from the Harvard law school.

The list served well to highlight how women are breaking glass ceilings, and competing on an equal basis with men for corporate positions both in management and in the boardroom.
