The Kenyan Universities have been in a frenzied mood in the past few months to implement the double intake of students for the 2011 intake. Just recently, the Joint admissions board (JAB) announced that the cut off points for male students to be a B grade of 63 points while that of female students is 61 points.
To be sure, the talk of double intake in our public Universities has been talked for a few years now. The double intake came about as the public Universities struggled to admit two sets of graduates. This from the newly introduced 8-4-4 system of education and the other from the previous 7-4-2-3 system of education. This was during the 1990/1991 academic year. Former President Moi had wanted the education system changed to 8-4-4 in order to inculcate in graduates a set of practical skills. This saw the first KCSE being done in 1989. Due to the double intake, KCSE graduates now have to stay home for close to two years before they join public Universities.
The Kenyan Universities intake 2011 in deed faces many hurdles. One of those hurdles is that the Universities are already overstretched as they are. The facilities have been completely exhausted and there is an acute shortage of lecturers. Attempting to take in double the current number of students will completely water down the quality of the Universities degree programs. Furthermore, some degree courses have demanding schedules that can never be shortened without severely compromising the quality. Such courses as medicine and engineering are very demanding and involve some practical attachment, which are essential in acquainting students with the real job market. Thus, even though some Universities such as Egerton are trying hard to implement this strategy, it needs careful planning lest it lowers the quality of learning greatly.

ReplyDeleteIts o.k but am jst amazed by how low the cut-off pts av gone doesn't this av negative implication i.e less hardwork n commitment on high skul students?food for thought.
ReplyDeleteLet students go i am one of those who are waiting and dead bored at home.
ReplyDeleteI pray it to fail so that we plan well
ReplyDeletelets not narrow our minds to kenya, we are in a global village world where quality matters. I fall in this group and really wondering of the quality of education i'm going to receive.
ReplyDeleteNothing is impossible if need arises because i do not know the reason why they put the issue publicly and after or if it worked in 1990/1991 why not know?
ReplyDeleteDouble intake is doomed to fail terribly. It is impossible to implement it this time round. What about HELB?We will get half the loan.
ReplyDeleteapart from teaching what else can a graduate in BA of education do? Nd is it true that 2010 candidates to UON will report in september 2012?
ReplyDeleteBA Education graduates can also work in companies as Human Resource professionals with some additional HR training, they can work in banks , for NGOs that work directly with communities etc.
ReplyDeleteWhat you need to know is that the undergraduate degree is just a stepping stone t what one wants to do, and these days, employers hire graduates from a variety of courses, and then train them for some time. What is important is to excel in the course.

this will eventually water down the quality of graduates in kenya.
ReplyDeletejab should atleast make it possible to change course, from that, that they themselves selected for individuals.
