Engineering is a profession that attracts some of the best and brightest minds, not just in Kenya but the world over. The depth of the course and the challenging curriculum means that only the fittest survive. In Kenya however, many fresh engineering graduates from Universities abandon the profession to pursue other interests.
Given that the Kenyan job market is somewhat saturated, one cannot blame them entirely. Many of such graduates land finance jobs where their analytical and problem solving skills are highly sought after. For instance, the big four auditing firms of KPMG, Deloitte, PWC, and Earnst&Young are known to recruit engineering graduates in large numbers.
Even for those that choose to pursue the engineering profession, they still have to contend with the disconnect between what they learnt in school and what actually happens in the field. Some disciplines such as Civil engineering are not badly affected as there is a lot of construction work currently underway.
