Kenya Power rationing program- Will it slow down the economic growth?

Kenya Power (formerly KPLC), is set to start a rationing program on Wednesday, 27th July. This comes barely two years after another power rationing program that saw the country plunged in darkness for some days. Kenya Power says that this rationing program will especially affect the industrial estates. Estates such as BaBa Dogo are bound to be affected. Nairobi region will experience a rationing of three hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The rationing will start from 6:30 pm to 9:30 on the said days. Towns outside Nairobi will however get only a day of rationing.

Manufacturers are likely to feel a heavy pinch as power is the single biggest cost of production. Equally, small scale business owners will suffer some losses. For instance, Kinyozis and Saloons get many of their customers in the evening and they are bound to experience a dint in their earnings on the said dates. Mr. Joseph Njoroge, the Kenya Power MD, says that the rationing program has been occasioned as a result of the malfunction of some generators and the program is expected to last no more than seven weeks. As soon as the Muhoroni power plant will be up and running, more power is expected to be fed to the national grid.
